Life Coaching

“Life coaching is a purposeful conversation that inspires you to create the life you want.” ~ Jeni Mumford

Gail McMeekin, the author of ‘The 12 Secrets of Highly Successful Women,’ says that women should evolve their lifestyles to honour their creative gifts and live free, fulfilled and prosperous lives. Life coaches help clients identify, pursue and achieve objectives. Life coaches are knowledgeable about common emotional problems that create obstacles, understand alternatives, and use a framework to deal with these emotional problems. Windy Dryden, the author of ‘Dealing with Clients' Emotional Problems in Life Coaching,’ says that anxiety, depression, guilt, hurt, problematic anger, problematic envy, problematic jealousy and shame are the eight emotional problems that serve as major obstacles. Albert Ellis, the founder of rational-emotive behaviour therapy, argues that rigid and extreme beliefs about adversities give rise to problematic negative emotions, while flexible and non-extreme beliefs cause constructive negative emotions. These beliefs determine how people think about adversities and respond to them. Chérie Carter-Scott, regarded as the original life coach, says that the coaching process includes clarifying wants, mapping out an action plan, and supporting the realization of the goal, vision or dream. Coaching is an effective way to identify and attain goals such as establishing a business, improving a personal relationship, getting fit and healthy, embarking on a new career or becoming more confident.

Respect diversity

An environment that respects diversity acknowledges people’s accomplishments and achievements. Clients may be surrounded by people with high expectations or those who are simply negaholic within a multicultural environment. Such clients need guidance to assess their preferences, talents and capabilities, and formulate goals. Chérie Carter-Scott and Lynn Stewart, the co-authors of ‘Transformational Life Coaching,’ say that coaches understand the levels of personal development including disconnection with the self, desire and defeat, limits to deserving, connection and abundance, and union and manifestation. A coach acts as a mirror enabling the client to see the disparity. Coaching sessions may include objectives as diverse as balance, finances, happiness, health, home, inner peace, preparation for a new phase of life, relationships, stress, and work or career.

Engage with individuals for change

A life coach remedies the gap between a client’s present and future reality. It’s of critical importance to assist the client believe in herself for her dreams to come true. Coaching conversations include values, focus and goal setting to align the client’s energies towards the agreed objective. A coach aids the client to see what is missing or obscuring her view, and helps externalize feelings and thoughts with respect to the goal. This enables the client to find the building blocks between her current perceptions and the desired identity. Sometimes a coach could lend a helping hand to sort out a direction or embark on a new chapter in life. Lessons from unrealized dreams give valuable insights allowing individuals to grow from everything that happens to them. Other solutions may include overcoming disappointment, disillusionment, or rejection. Life coaches are thus instrumental in engaging with clients counselling them to overcome fears and accomplish seemingly impossible challenges.
